# Add MCP servers to ChatGPT

ChatGPT has no config file; you add remote MCP servers as apps in Developer mode.

- **Where**: Turn on Developer mode under Settings > Security and login, or ask your workspace admin. Then create an app with the server URL, choose OAuth or no auth, and run Scan Tools.
- **Top-level key**: —
- **Format**: —
- **OAuth for remote servers**:

Turn on Developer mode under Settings > Security and login, or ask your workspace admin. Then create an app with the server URL, choose OAuth or no auth, and run Scan Tools.

## Notes and quirks

- ChatGPT on the web connects only to remote servers. Private servers can be reached through Secure MCP Tunnel.
- For OAuth it supports CIMD, dynamic registration or a client you define. Request offline_access to get refresh tokens.
- The ChatGPT desktop app reads Codex's ~/.codex/config.toml, including stdio servers.
- Local servers such as Playwright can't be added on the web.
