## 60 MCP servers

Official vendor servers plus a few well-kept community ones, verified on 2026-10-01. Archived and deprecated servers, such as the old reference Postgres and Puppeteer servers, are left out.

- [Everything](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/everything): Reference test server from the MCP project that exposes every protocol feature, for checking that a client works.

- [Fetch](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/fetch): Fetches a web page and converts it to Markdown so the model can read it. Part of the MCP project's reference set.

- [Filesystem](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/filesystem): Reads, writes, searches and moves local files, limited to the directories you pass in when it starts.

- [Git](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/git): Works with a local Git repository from the agent: status, diffs, history, branches and commits, on a repo path you choose.

- [Memory](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/memory): Keeps a knowledge graph of entities and relations in a local file so the agent can recall facts between sessions.

- [Sequential Thinking](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/sequential-thinking): Gives the model a scratchpad for breaking a problem into numbered thoughts it can revise or branch.

- [Time](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/time): Returns the current time and converts times between zones using IANA names. No keys or configuration needed.

- [GitHub](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/github): GitHub's own server for repos, issues, pull requests, Actions and code search, with switchable toolsets.

- [GitLab](https://dotsagent.io/mcp/servers/gitlab): GitLab's built-in endpoint for issues, merge requests, pipelines and search, with selectable toolsets.

## What MCP is

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI applications to outside systems. A server wraps one thing, such as a GitHub account, a database or a browser, and describes what it offers. Any application that speaks MCP can then use it without custom integration code.

The application you work in, such as Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code, is the host. Inside it, an MCP client holds the connection to each server. Local servers run as a child process and talk over stdio; remote servers are reached over Streamable HTTP. The older HTTP+SSE transport has been deprecated since 2025-03-26.

Servers expose three kinds of things. Tools are functions the model can call, such as creating an issue. Resources are data the application can pull into context, such as a file or a record. Prompts are reusable templates a user can pick. Client support varies: Zed, for example, handles only tools and prompts.

## What changed in 2026-07-28

- The protocol is now stateless. The initialize handshake and the Mcp-Session-Id header are gone, and every request carries the protocol version and client capabilities in _meta.
- Servers can offer an optional server/discover call, so a client can ask what a server supports.
- Every Streamable HTTP request must send Mcp-Method and Mcp-Name headers as well as MCP-Protocol-Version. SSE resumability through Last-Event-ID has been removed.
- Multi Round-Trip Requests replace the old pattern in which a server sent its own elicitation, sampling or roots requests back to the client.
- List results now carry ttlMs and cacheScope, telling clients how long a list stays valid and who may share it.
- A formal extensions framework arrives. Tasks moved into the io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks extension, and MCP Apps and Enterprise Managed Authorization are extensions too.
- A new deprecation policy gives features at least 12 months before removal. Roots, Sampling and Logging are the first features deprecated under it.

## How authorisation works

Authorisation is optional in MCP. When an HTTP server uses it, it follows OAuth 2.1 and acts as a resource server: it publishes Protected Resource Metadata (RFC 9728) that names its authorisation server, which the client then finds through RFC 8414 or OpenID Connect Discovery. Clients must use PKCE, send RFC 8707 resource indicators so each token is tied to one server, and check the iss parameter defined in RFC 9207.

For registering the client itself, the 2026-07-28 spec prefers Client ID Metadata Documents (CIMD). Pre-registration still works, and Dynamic Client Registration (DCR) is allowed but deprecated in favour of CIMD. Many vendors already skip DCR: Slack, Asana and HubSpot require a pre-registered client, and Vercel accepts only approved ones.

## The official registry

The MCP Registry lists public servers under reverse-DNS names such as io.github.user/server or com.vendor/server, with each namespace proved through GitHub, DNS or HTTP. It is still a preview: the v0.1 API has been frozen since 2025-10-24, yet the maintainers warn of possible breaking changes or wiped data before general availability. It exists to feed aggregators and sub-registries, so hosts are not meant to query it directly.

`shell`

```
curl 'https://registry.modelcontextprotocol.io/v0.1/servers?limit=5'
```

## Official SDKs

- **Tier 1**: TypeScript, Python, C#, Go, Rust, Ruby
- **Tier 2**: Java
- **Tier 3**: Swift, PHP, Kotlin

A local MCP server runs with your user account's permissions, and a hosted one acts with whatever token you hand it. Read the code or docs first, pin a version instead of @latest, and prefer the vendor's own server. [Agent security guide →](https://dotsagent.io/security)

## MCP questions

### What is the latest MCP spec version?

The current version is 2026-07-28, the fifth dated release, replacing 2025-11-25. It makes the protocol stateless, so code written for the 2025 versions needs migration. At launch the TypeScript, Python, Go and C# SDKs supported it, with Rust in beta, and several vendor servers, GitLab among them, still document support only up to 2025-11-25.

### Is the MCP SSE transport deprecated?

Yes. HTTP+SSE has been deprecated since 2025-03-26, and SEP-2596 sets removal no earlier than three months after that SEP becomes Final; no date has been announced. Many vendors have already switched their /sse endpoints off, Asana on 2026-05-11. Use Streamable HTTP for remote servers.

### Who governs the Model Context Protocol now?

Anthropic donated MCP to the Agentic AI Foundation, a directed fund of the Linux Foundation, on 2025-12-09. Anthropic, Block and OpenAI co-founded the foundation. Its board handles budget and membership, while technical decisions stay with the MCP Steering Group through the SEP process, led by David Soria Parra and Den Delimarsky.

### Does an MCP server need OAuth?

No, authorisation is optional in the spec. Several servers in our catalogue, such as Microsoft Learn and AWS Knowledge, need no auth at all, and local servers usually read an API key from an environment variable. When a hosted server does use auth, it follows the OAuth 2.1 profile described above.

### Which languages have official MCP SDKs?

The SDK page lists TypeScript, Python, C#, Go, Rust and Ruby as Tier 1, Java as Tier 2, and Swift, PHP and Kotlin as Tier 3. Tier 1 does not mean every SDK already speaks 2026-07-28: the release post named TypeScript, Python, Go and C#, with Rust in beta.

### Should my MCP client read the official registry directly?

The registry is designed for aggregators and sub-registries rather than for every host to query. It is also still a preview, with a frozen v0.1 API but no promise against breaking changes before general availability. Search results include a lot of third-party entries, so check the namespace before trusting one.
